The Gap

What is the Gap?

The gap is the space between where you are now and where you want to be. It’s a metaphor but it’s also real. Your gap could be a financial, social, emotional, psychological, physical, spiritual, academic, sporting, professional or lifestyle one. Or something else. It could be a combination.

Crossing the Gap

Crossing the gap invariably comes down to some pretty simple (but not always easy) things:

1. Courage. Face your fears and get uncomfortable.
2. Better decisions and behaviours. Do what’s necessary, not what’s easy.
3. Honesty and humility. With yourself and others. Lose the ego.
4. Total commitment to the change process. Not part-time motivation.
5. Clarity. Of vision, purpose and goals.
6. Emotional investment. Control your controllables.
7. Being solution-focused. Not problem-obsessed. Find a way.
8. Resilience. Life’s messy and shit doesn’t work itself out. You do.

Get Busy. ;)

I just have to say that I LOVE getting this motivation every day. It’s amazing how often I can hear how to cross the gap, get the results I want, succeed, whatever you want to call it and STILL need to hear it again another way and another… Thanks!

Good info for people who struggle with getting going, thankyou CH. May I add that there is a fine line to tread at No.7; it is fundamentally essential to acknowledge and assess the problem before one can focus fully on resolving it. To “find a way” requires understanding the problem and knowing when and how to focus on the solution: quite often this process can benefit from help by being humble (as at No.3 then also No. 6) and asking for help.

Just by identifying the gap means you’re well on the way to getting where you need to be. When you acknowledge there’s a gap, that’s enough to create some tension and discomfort. If you focus on the gap every day, your discomfort grows until you HAVE to do something to resolve it. This is when you start taking action to alleviate the discomfort, resolve the gap and make the change you need to.
Works for me every time :-)

That resonates strongly with me Craig. Another thing I keep reminding myself is “More action; less thinking”. I’m one of those people who can over-analyse and want to be sure about all the details before I do something. But I get better results when I do something.
Whatever the problem or goal is: weight-loss, fitness, relationship issue, work challenge – get out and do something rather than dwelling on it. pick up the phone, go for a walk. Once you do something, you get some momentum and you can always change direction if you need, but you’re moving.
