The Change Train
Hi Everyone. As I mentioned in my first post back for the year, in 2012 I’m committed to making me-dot-com a much more practical (as opposed to purely theoretical) and interactive place to hang out. Of course, I can’t do that by myself. If change lives in the doing, then let’s be the group of people that does more over the next twelve months. Together. As a cyber-team. Simple really. Talking is only good to a point. Then it’s just noise. With that in mind, today I’m inviting you to step out of the theory of change and into the practical reality of it. In a small and not-too-terrifying way.
Knowing that some of you are TSC (Total Scaredy Cats) when it comes to new things or any kind of public commitment, I’ve decided to make our initial project a relatively simple one to be part of. For starters, I’m only asking for a seven-day commitment. Too easy. Having previously run twenty-eight day projects (on this site), I’m well aware of the typical drop-off (about eighty percent), so I thought we’d start with baby steps and something not-too daunting.
Secondly, participation in this project only requires fifteen minutes per day. Approximately. That’s a measly one hundred and five minutes out of your 10,080-minute week. Or, a barely-noticeable one(ish) percent of your time.
The Objective of the Project
This project is all about doing something different to create something different. A different result. Mindset. Expectation. It’s about creating momentum. And emotional shift. It’s about opening a new door. Breaking down a barrier. Or two. Stepping out of those familiar and comfortable habits and patterns. It’s about commitment. It’s about finishing something. For once. Turning down the cerebral noise. Learning something new. And, it’s about having an experience that you (otherwise) would not have had. Bottom line; it’s about growth.
Specifically, your growth.
How it Works
For the next seven days (from tomorrow – Tuesday Melbourne time, Monday in the Northern Hemisphere) it’s your job to check in here and I’ll tell you what your daily task will be. It could be a mental, emotional, physical or social challenge. Or, it could be a combination. Because we’re all different (physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, etc.), each task will represent something different to each of us. Your easy could be my hard. My comfortable could be your uncomfortable. And so on. Of course with projects like this, it’s up to you to exercise discretion as to your level of involvement and participation. Don’t do anything that you consider to be potentially dangerous (for yourself or anyone else). Having said that, I can’t see any of the fifteen-minute challenges being particularly terrifying or life-threatening.
Accountability
If you decide to be part of this project, then for the next seven days (from tomorrow) you’re required to report in (via the comment link) once you’ve completed your daily task. This check-in can be as brief or detailed as you like. Your check-in comment might be something as simple and concise as ‘done’ (with your name attached). Or, you might feel compelled to share a thought, idea or experience. You may even want to ask a question.
Group Support
While I’m a big believer in taking personal responsibility for our choices, behaviours and results, I’m also an advocate for like-minded people working together and supporting each other towards positive change. For the next seven days I will not be answering (most of the) questions in the comment section but you will. I know that our group (you, the readers on this site) possess enough collective intelligence, empathy, experience and knowledge to be able to offer sound advice, direction and feedback. So, if somebody needs an answer or some advice and you feel you can help, jump in. If you would like to respond to somebody you can simply hit the ‘reply’ link directly below their comment. Having said that, keep in mind that all we’re doing here is sharing ideas, experience and general advice (not to be confused with a professional consultation or prescription).
Free Stuff
Not that you should need another incentive to get on board but just because I’m awesome
, each day I’m gonna (randomly) give away free stuff (books, shirts, CD’s) to some of our participants. But wait, there’s more. OMG! Speaking of awesome, my great friends at Everlast Australia have kindly offered to throw seven training packs (one for each day) into the give-away mix (thanks to Adam Ballesty). Each training pack consists of an Everlast training bag, shorts, training top (all from the new range) and a hoodie (like in the pic). Each pack is worth about $250.00 and I’m pretty sure their workout gear is the coolest on earth. As all my friends and colleagues know, I live in Everlast kit.

Being an avid reader on the sidelines for the past several months now (okay…lurker!), I have to admit I hadn’t anticipated being anything other than that!
Don’t get me wrong…I thoroughly enjoy reading your posts and take a lot from them…I just didn’t have anything to say (hmm or in all honesty perhaps suffered from a little stage fright!)
That all changed when I read your latest post and I had a decision to make. I could keep on keeping on (and expect a different outcome – D’oh!) or I could take a deep breath in, hold my nose, close my eyes and jump straight into this doing project you’ve created, knowing that at the very least I can always tread water if the going get’s too tough!
A risk yes…though in the scheme of things…a calculated one at best and probably no where near as big a deal as I am imagining it to be!
I must also admit the lure of a training pack from Everlast Australia was certainly a nice carrot!
As the saying goes, ‘Nothing ventured, nothing gained!’ What have I got to loose? Apart from another level of comfort that is!
So I guess what I’m saying is…I’m in! I’m 100% in and now that I have publicly declared this to be true, there’s no turning back!

Just started my own challenge today so why not add another. I signed up to do the run leg (5km) in a local triathlon with a team from work, it is 9 weeks away so plenty of time to train for it, did my first run this morning (only 2.5km) and very slow and steady but I made it without having to stop and walk. Its a start anyway. Feeling pretty chuffed son bring on the challenge.

I’ve already started, but my challenge for the week is to study Japanese (actively!) for at least an hour a day. I’m already on two days counting today and going strong, but it’s usually around the 3rd or 4th day I get a bit flexible on what “studying” means so the timing is perfect. I’m in! (included in the “study” bit is also “getting up early” which is the main problem when it comes to this challenge. XD

I am soooo in! I have vicarious been reading your posts forwarded by a friend Liss. I am my own person now and subscribed to receiving them. I have done my 30 mins at the gym and totally accept the challenge for another 15 mins on the stair. Today is my day to make me better. Gotta love me….

I did 15 minutes on an incline of 15 on my treadmill. Yay! AND my studio is on the second story of our showroom and I climbed those stairs at least 25 times!
0 I did 15 minutes running up and down the steep staircase in the double storey building i work in. Went in and did it early. What a buzz thinking of the possibility of many others doing the exact same thing as me all over the world is awesome. Giddyup and bring on tomorrow

Hi Craig Wow I didn’t reailIse just how long 15 minutes could be !!!! First the hill/stairs then the do nothing then the jog / run. Now a day on water! It seems to me at my age 62 ( 63 next month ) that I have been wasting a lot of my time on thinking that I was doing more in all areas of my life. Thanks Craig for the inspiration it has taught me a lot especially cerebrally .To sit peacefully in my car in a wood and think of nothing then being blessed by seeing a beautiful pheasant and a squirrel feeding oblivious to my presence will live with me forever.(Dear diary must clear 15 minutes to do and think of nothing). Craig you rock

Well, i’m kicking the booze out the door and to the curb at last. Sure has been a battle and a hinderance for me being my best, so taking action. Attending an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting today. A bit scary for me, but i think it will be a growth experience, and a useful one. Then i’m going for a run.

Didn’t think much of caffeine free day. Do you have ANY idea how bad a caffeine withdrawal headache can be? SNNNAAARRRLL!!! Last time it took 4 days to clear…4 DAYS! So, onto my more recent (and infinitely MORE SUCCESSFUL) days. Okay, random act of kindness was training new Bronze Medallion candidates at a local surf club, and procrastination, well, I cleaned out the garage, so there you go, did it, and DONE! Now I have somewhere to park the car. YEEHA Thanks Harps!
I stopped “The Doing Project” after Day 3. I realised that I didn’t need/want someone telling me how to live my life, I am happy with the challenges I give myself, how I eat, I am always nice – well, almost always – lol. I know I have few things to “fix” but I am slowly getting there. So not sure how you would view it, I wasn’t even going to post anything more but thought you may like feedback anyway as your Daily Project really worked for me but in a different way! Keep up your great work, I will still be there reading your blogs for inspiration.
