Personal Development… from 2,500 years ago.

Busily preparing for night one of the Life Renovation program, so no post today but…. off the back of yesterday’s post about Personal Development Zombies and (some) people’s inability to be able to think for themselves, we received a great quote from the Buddha courtesy of Fiery.

Thanks for sharing Fiery; clearly my thoughts were not original!

Here it is:

Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many.
Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books.
Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders.
Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.
But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.
The Buddha

If you have an amazing quote (relatively brief… and not one we’ve heard ten thousand times) feel free to send it through as a comment… if it gets published on my home page, the bald man will send you a copy of Fattitude (hopefully you don’t live in Siberia).

Live, Laugh, Love and Learn.
And get off your ass.

Thanks Fiery.

Fantastic quote Fiery. Its been on my wall for a while.

I have posted under other names before but I cant currently remember which…

Here’s my contribution for today :)
“…It isn’t reasonable to ask that we achieve perfection. What is reasonable is that we never cease to aim for it.”
Dr Atul Gawande

Enjoy,
Liv

(Once I realise what names they are, I’ll post it…)

Hey Craig,

I really like the quote from Buddha,I have been telling people they can’t believe everything they read or hear etc… for ages ( they usually roll their eyes ).When we lived in Iran people ( from Australia who had never been there) were telling us what it is like there and we were the ones actually living there and it was nothing like what they had ” heard or seen etc…”
I could go on but I can hear you yawning from here!

Also I like the Live , Laugh, Love and Learn and get off your ass.

Leonardo da Vinci is quoted* as having said: “Anyone who conducts an argument by appealing to authority is not using his intelligence; he is just using his memory.”
I really can’t swear he said it, b/c I wasn’t there — or maybe I was in a past life :-)

My contribution for what it is worth…don’t know who the author is but I like it!

“Don’t argue with dumb people…it only make you dumber!”

“We over estimate what we can do in a week and under estimate what we can do in a year”

I have no idea where it came from or if I made it up…..does it matter.

This powerful line is the only sentence in the English language made up of ten words all consisting of two letters -”If it is to be, it is up to me” William H Johnsen

How true!

Warmest, Craig,

Wow, this could become quite an amazing thread of quotes if this progress continues.

Today’s:
This is a mantra published in a book by Sean Covey. A mantra (for those of you who may not have heard of it) is an affirmation that you should say to yourself until you believe it implicitly (and hopefully it is a positive one, or you need to read more of Craig’s Blog!)
It was simple but it stuck;
“Nothing less”.
Although broad, it applies to almost everything; nothing less than your best, nothing less than 100% effort, staying on the road to better health because you deserve nothing less….Nothing less than living your life to the full, and being your best self in as many facets of your life as possible. (The fully human, fully alive concept)

ok, enough :) .

Thanks for your post Craig & Friends

PS I thought Craig’s signing off line was excellent and also “Just get that shit done once and for all” (now on a post-it in front of me to help me master procrastination :P )

Have a cheerful day,

Liv

(Sorry, I should be more specific; a mantra is a prayer while a personal mantra is what I spoke about :) )

I loved the quote from the Buddha!
Here’s another one from fitness guru Rowena Szeszeran-McEvoy which impresses me too.
“Give 100% to everything you do.
Live your life with every expectation of huge success.
Love everyday, every minute, every experience.
Chase every opportunity that excites you.
Make every person feel special.
Find out who you really are and love being you.
Make your life loveable and then love it with a fierce passion.
Believe you will live forever but live everyday as if your time could run out tomorrow!”

Craig, by hook or by crook, I’ll win that copy of your book. :)

Here’s another quote that has been my guiding light my whole life long: “To thine own self be true” and I hope it fits your bill.

Have a successful Life Renovation course.

My favourite word in the English dictionary is ‘humility’.

“I have learned through the lives of great leaders that greatness comes from humility and being at times, self-effacing.”
Patrick Daniel, CEO of North American Energy & Pipeline Co.

Craig, FYI, 8121949 is Christine from Canada. Like Liv, it seems I too have several DNA’s.
