A Brief Report from the U.S.

Hi Team.

Hope this finds you all well. Thanks for all your great comments on Wednesday’s post and for your well wishes for my trip. You don’t mind if I weave some of your favourite sayings/quotes into my presentations do you? I’ll credit you of course…

So I’m a little under-slept, under-exercised and over-fed but other than that, I’m brand new. We had a few dramas between Melbourne and here but we made it in one piece, and all is good. I gotta say, if I lived in the States I would weigh 400lbs by Christmas. The meals here are ridiculous. Last night I went out with the lads for dinner and ordered the healthiest thing on the menu; a chicken salad. It came with mayo, dressing, cheese, croutons and what looked like, an emu! Paul, my travel partner almost ate himself to death with several courses. He was in pain the whole night and being the nurturer I am, I laughed at him. A lot. He would have done the same for me. It’s a guy thing.

I’m sitting in my hotel room in Denver and am about to take my slightly fatter self for a jog in the rare air. About 25% less O2 up here because we’re at over 6,000 ft. We head up to the snow fields of Keystone tomorrow and Mr Co-ordination will show the masses how not to ski. Hopefully my presentation at the conference will be of a higher standard than my skiing.

Later today Richard (our host over here) is taking a whole bunch of us to see the sites and probably to eat another farm animal or two. Seriously, I need to figure out an eating strategy for over here or I’m gonna have diabetes by next Tuesday. Isn’t it weird how when you’re out of your environment, your routine and all that’s familiar, it takes a while for your body and your head to figure out what’s going on? My body is not happy with me right now; it thinks I’m abusing it. I’ve only had about four hours sleep in the last two days. Jet lag kinda sucks.

Anyway, enough waffle from me. I will post something of substance on Monday providing I don’t encounter internet problems. Enjoy your weekend, be amazing by choice and I’ll see you (kind of) on Monday.

Eating out survival tactics 101
Howabout…
1. Ask for the dressing/croutons on the side
2. Order from the appetizer menu
3. Order a salad on the side (if there is no main that fits the bill)
4. Only order emu which is steamed; poached; roasted; broiled; boiled; grilled; or baked or ask for it to be prepared this way
5. Check out the menu before you get there to plan your selection strategy. http://denver.citysearch.com/yellowpages/results/Denver_CO/restaurants+/page1.html
6. If all else fails blow the diet and visit the Cheesecake Factory in Denver. (Winner “Best Dessert” — 2002 Boulder County Gold 2002 Reader’s Choice Award (Daily Camera) … DENVER 1201 16th Street, Denver, CO 80202 (303) 595-0333)
Have fun ()

Hello Mr USA. Enjoy your trip and try not to get heart disease while you’re here! Seb.

Some travelling companion you are laughing at Paul! Its a good thing you didn’t come to Italy with me where it is quite normal to serve up 6 courses and eat for 2 hours solid. I don’t like being laughed at when I’m in pain. I did discover from that experience that you really don’t need to eat the farm animals and it’s not a crime to leave food on your plate.

Have fun in USA. Try not to return on crutches.

Maybe that’s why I don’t eat out often. (So when I do, I don’t really care how much fat I’m eating.)

Um, I remember the same thing when eating out in Orlando. Unfortunately I programmed my stomach to it then and went all out and all half attempts at self control went out the window which meant I returned to Oz not fitting the clothes I departed Oz in!

I will be interested in hearing of your plan to keep this from happening to you!!! The running sounds a great start! A great example of ‘arsing it up’!

Most of all, have a FABBO trip!

Pip

Hi, Craig.
I have no idea what they have on the menus in Keystone except probably too much of whatever. That whole supersizing thing is pretty awful, isn’t it? Try to find a Tokyo Joe’s. It’s fast food, but actually pretty healthy stuff. They have a website and even list nutrition facts for their offerings there. http://www.tokyojoes.com There might be one up in Keystone. I know there are several in Denver if you end up staying there again on the return trip. If you can’t find anything else, there’s always that good ol’ garden salad with grilled chiken breast and balsamic vinaigrette on the side. (My default choice for places where there’s nothing else on the menu that’s viable.) Have fun up Keystone. Go slow when you start getting active at that altitude, REALLY. Especially if you’re already feeling the jet lag. The air is really thin up there! No sense in ruining your trip with altitude sickness.
Cheers!

craig!
I spent 5 years working as a trek leader in The States many moons ago and used to put on about 10kgs during the northern hemisphere summer months EVERY YEAR!
It’s a REAL challenge and requires a level of self discipline I didnt have back then!

Fav quotes: “life is either a daring adventure or nothing” Helen Keller

“You don’t stop playing because you grow old you grow old because you stop playing”( author unknown)

Having spent the last umpteen yrs in Sydney trying to turn “old” 50 yr olds into “young” 80 yr olds(to parody a line from your recent article) ie Fitness/lifestyle coaching.
Working on ‘attitudes’ as you always stress is the key to success!
Love yer stuff! Jamo

Do you reckon when i grow up i will be clever enough to spread the word about exercising in water to lots of people just like you?

I can’t imagine you will eat too much, but buoy if you do….you could float more easily when performing deep water running techniques in those gorgeous bikinis.

Absorb all you can whilst over there.

Its JSP signing off after enjoying your blog x

Hope you enjoy Denver…I live about 20 minutes outside of downtown in Colorado’s thin-aired (and currently snow-laden)foothills.
If you get the chance, there’s a great gelato cafe in downtown. It’s called Gelazzi. It’s delicious. And at least slightly healthier than cheesecake.
