Hello Groovers
I hope your weekend was spectacular because you chose to make it that way. In reference to today’s post, depending on where you’re at, some of you might need to open your mind a teensy-weensy bit if you’re to benefit in any way from this installment here at me-dot-com. You don’t need to agree with it, but you might want to consider it and leave your self-limiting thinking at the door. As a scientist, pragmatist and career skeptic, I have had to unlearn many things over the years in my quest for personal growth, truth, enlightenment and a deeper level of understanding of certain things. Many times I have had to acknowledge that (1) I don’t know the truth or (2) my current beliefs are either totally wrong, self-limiting, founded on questionable logic or adopted from other people; such as when our parents beliefs become our own by default. In order to explore a subject like healing from a different and non-traditional perspective and to do it in a productive, open and meaningful way, I have had to overcome (for want of a better term) my traditional academic learning, my numerous years of religiosity and the accepted societal norms I’ve had shoved down my throat – or should I say, into my brain – for a lifetime. Not to mention dealing with the mountain of pre-existing, self-limiting beliefs that I allowed to stop me from growing, learning, changing, evolving and exploring my potential. Having said all of that, let’s get under way.
PNI
Courtesy of a field of scientific study called Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) – and yep, it’s all one word – we now know with absolute certainty that the way you and I think has a direct and often measurable effect on our immune system. That is, how weak or strong it will be and how effectively it will combat sickness and disease. It has been said that beyond genetics, our head (and what happens in there) is one of the greatest determinants of health. The practical reality of this means that the way that we process information and the way we deal (emotionally and mentally) with the events, situations and happenings of our life has a very real impact on our immune system and therefore our body’s ability to fight disease and to deal with general illness. In many ways we have the potential to “think” ourselves into sickness or into better health. And we do it all the time; one way or the other. We’ve all seen people worry themselves sick. Literally. Just as we all know of people who have recovered from, or lived with, conditions that “should have killed them” long ago. Fortunately these people chose to create their own reality (health, survival) rather than accept a less-than-desirable reality that someone else may have tried to impose on them. Sometimes conventional wisdom is actually conventional stupidity.
Here’s a practical example of how this stuff can work:
1. A healthy person becomes “stressed” because of an event or circumstance in their world. In this instance, stress being a personal (that is, self-created) mental and emotional response to a situation or perceived situation. And of course, situations don’t create stress, people do. You and me. There are no good or bad situations, only different interpretations of, and reactions to, the same thing. The moment we label something (good, bad, hard, easy, tragic), is the moment we hand over our personal power to that thing (again) and the moment we step into a mindset of inevitability (about what will happen) and helplessness. Things only have the meaning we give them, so if we decide that something will be stressful and terrifying, it will be – because we create that personal reality.
2. The immediate consequence of this state of stress is that we see changes in the individual’s physiology; increased cortisol production, increased blood pressure, increased respiration and often, an overall feeling of illness and weaknesses. All of these undesirable changes being self-created. Not intentionally, but self-created nonetheless.
3. The medium-term consequence (one day to one week) of un-managed, on-going inner turmoil is to see a decrease in “performance” of the immune system. It becomes less effective and less able to deal with the constant barrage of physical challenges that is thrown at the typical human body. The net result of this is that the individual will then become more susceptible to illness, disease and injury, she will recover slower from existing conditions, her energy levels will decrease and her emotional state will be impacted even further by her declining physical condition. It becomes a vicious cycle.
4. The long-term consequence of prolonged inner turmoil is physical illness and eventually, disease. Without some kind of intervention, it’s inevitable. But panic not, the good news is that our bodies have an amazing capacity to heal – we just need to learn how to “drive” them. Contrary to popular thinking, the psychological, emotional and physical are in fact not three separate systems, but one. One incredible integrated system that is dependant on all three components for function, health and survival – if only we in the West weren’t so compelled to treat things (bodies for example) in isolation. For many (many) years I have taught that for the majority of us, obesity (to use a specific and common example) is merely a by-product of, or reflection of, an individual’s level of emotional and psychological health. In most situations, once we “fix” what’s happening above the shoulders, the physical transformation will be rapid and permanent. If only we could see more health professionals treating their patients as though they were multi-dimensional, amazing beings, rather than a bunch of bones, muscles, organs and nerves with a particular physical condition. Then we might inhabit a totally different landscape – in terms of our overall health as a society.
An Internal Environment of Healing
Know it or not, believe or not, understand it or not, you and I have the ability to create an internal environment of healing. I can’t tell you exactly how it works (in every case) and fortunately I don’t need to. I’m not that clever. Just like I don’t need to be a mechanic or an engineer to be able to drive a car and to benefit from what it can do and where it can take me. And just like I don’t need to be able to explain how this computer I’m currently using works (on a technical level) to be able to share this message with you. I just need to be able to take advantage of its considerable potential. Hmm… what a thought.
It Works… How?
If you’re anything like me, then you have absolutely no idea how you can pick up your mobile (cell) phone and be talking with someone on the other side of the planet in a matter of seconds. My creative brain can’t even begin to fathom how that actually happens. I just know it’s possible, so I exploit it. What was once an incredible and seemingly impossible notion – to talk with someone in another country as you drive your car that cost more than your parent’s first house – is now common place. We don’t need to understand technology to benefit from it. Thankfully. Otherwise, I’d never be able to leave the house!
The Placebo Effect
We know that in a very real and practical way our beliefs determine our reality, so with this in mind, could it be possible that our beliefs determine – or at the very least, impact on – our health in a significant way? Consider the use of the double-blind study; a standard scientific practice. In order to test the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of a drug, two groups of people are given identical (looking) tablets; one being the trial drug, the other a placebo – a whole lot of nothing. Neither group knows what they are taking and while we will usually see the expected changes (physical responses) in the drug-taking group, what is amazing is that invariably we see significant changes in a surprisingly high percentage of the control group also; the people who are taking… nothing. Even in the placebo group it’s common to witness results like – feelings of improved health, more energy, better sleep, better recovery and increased muscle mass. While on the negative side we might see outcomes like increased anxiety, restlessness, poor sleep and even things like rashes, swelling and nausea; all self-created. The good and the bad. Time and time again we see the participants who think they are taking a drug (but in reality are not) produce significant biochemical and physical changes. They (literally) change their physiology – for better or worse – because of their beliefs. Their thinking.
So Much to Learn
The body is an incredible and still largely misunderstood and mysterious machine and all too often we allow our lack of understanding and lack of belief, inhibit our body’s ability to heal itself (and not just from minor cuts and infections). Our thinking (personal reality) can be the very thing that stands in the way of what some might call a miracle. Despite our incredible scientific advancements and our brilliant researchers and medical folk (and they are brilliant), there’s still way more that we don’t know about the human body and its potential, than we do. I can’t sit here at my keyboard and give you a step by step prescription to heal yourself from a particular disease but I can tell you that you and I have a far greater potential to heal ourselves than most science and “group thinking” might suggest. And that’s coming from a scientist. Not a particularly good one, but a scientist nonetheless. Just because you and I (or even the “experts”) don’t understand how or why certain things happen – spontaneous healing for example – doesn’t mean it can’t happen, it just means that at this point in time, our body’s ability to heal itself is beyond our current level of understanding.
A Story of Spontaneous Healing
In his book ‘Health and Healing’, Doctor Andrew Weil tells the story of a patient in his fifties who had lived for years with cutaneous warts covering most of his body. Understandably, this condition was a great source of social and emotional discomfort for the poor man. Years of conventional methods of treatment had only multiplied the number of warts on his body and the constant embarrassment of the highly visible viral infection had made his life a very unpleasant place to be at times. The man’s doctor (a colleague of Doctor Weil), who clearly understood the relationship between the psychological and the physiological – that is, the ability we have to heal ourselves – decided to offer the patient a last-resort extreme form of new treatment; a powerful form of radiation that was somewhat risky, but incredibly effective. Without hesitation, the patient agreed to the sure-fire treatment, happy in the belief that a life without warts was worth the risk of any potential side effects that may accompany the cutting-edge therapy. The man was given the treatment and sure enough, within days all of the warts (many hundreds) had fallen off his body. They never returned. The healing was complete and permanent but the totally cool part of this story, is that patient actually cured himself. There was no breakthrough radiation treatment. The doctor and a radiologist colleague had simply taken the man into the special “treatment room” (in fact a darkened X-ray room), asked him to disrobe and made him stand in front of some very impressive looking, state-of-the-art machines which made a loud humming noise but actually emitted zero radiation. All show and no go, you might say. So great was his belief in his impending healing that he created it. His internal reality created a very real physical transformation. So the man who had endured years of pain, the man who couldn’t be cured by conventional medicine, healed himself in a few days. Now, some people will read stories like this and their very intellectual and scientific minds will discount this result as some kind of inexplicable medical anomaly; these are the people who also close the door on their own unexplored potential and power. What a pity. And so unnecessary. It’s crucial that you and I don’t let fear, arrogance, ignorance or lack of understanding stand in the way of the truly incredible and the truly possible. When we learn to drive our bodies and we begin to explore their potential, then we open the door to a whole new world of possibilities and self-created realities. With physical health and healing being just two of the potential benefits.
Now THAT is exciting.
Scientific Fact?
Over the years and as our understanding has grown, we have continued to watch scientific “fact” become science-fiction. So to speak. Some of what was considered to be non-negotiable science and medical fact in the 1950′s is now considered to be laughable and extremely naive. But the truth is that at that time, they knew no better. One hundred years from now how do you think the great minds of the twenty second century will view the way we currently approach health, healing and disease? Do you think they might look at the “scientific and medical fact” of 2009 and have a little chuckle to themselves?
To be honest, I still don’t completely understand this stuff and I probably never will. I will however continue to learn, explore, ask the hard questions and challenge what I consider to be self-limiting, conventional thinking. My advice to you is to enjoy your body and your mind and to allow the two to work together in harmony.
Love your thoughts on this topic – even you long-time Lurkers.

Hi Craig, I want to acknowledge your relentless research and informative info into the brilliance of the mind and the effect that it has on the emotional and physical aspects in life. Regarding manifesting illness in life, I grew up and witness first hand with my mother all the illness that was endure. Once living with me a lot of her physical aliments started to disappeared, It was like a miracle! Yet a lot of damage had been created because of trapped fear, she has since passed away. With all your writings there is something that will jump out and resonate with me, it’s like…Ah ha! You have a real gift in expressing yourself quite clearly. I’m amazed how you fit everything in your busy schedule…what a sacrifice! When do you get to relax? I really appreciate your stuff and I’m blown away by your work! I’ve never responded before coz I felt I had nothing of value to contribute.
Gratefully Bella
Hi Bella. Thankyou for saying hello and for your kind words.
I often get asked the “when do you relax” question. To be honest, writing gives me great pleasure and when I write something that I consider might be of value to others, it gives me great joy and I find the whole process therapeutic.
Don’t be a stranger Bella – Beautiful name – (Literally)
Excellent post, I fully agree.

Hi Craig,
As an ex-nurse & someone who’s always been interested in all medical sciences, it’s not a stretch for me personally to believe in the whole self healing theory, at all. I think there are definetely ‘other energy’ fields (spooky as it sounds) in play, ones not already recognized or acknowledged by our current understandings. Things like how people can still experience pain and feeling in a limb that has been removed (phantom pain) for example always intrigues me.
I think perhaps that the Chinese, with their use of meridians and other energy channels in the body are a bit closer to the truth than our western medicine is, at present.
Great stuff Craig and I’m glad to read that writing your posts give you such pleasure. That certainly makes it a ‘win/win’ situation for us all. I’ve often wanted to ask that question myself so thanks Bella !

Hi Craig,
What an interesting topic. The human body is indeed far more complex and intuitive than we give it credit for. There are so many inexplicable things such as:
Why do school teachers almost always get a cold at the beginning of each school holiday?
Why do so many couples fall pregnant as soon as they stop trying or have their adoption approved?
Why do many elderly people die soon after they reach a major milestone? (eg: many elderly supporters died very soon after the Swans won the 2005 premiership – an unfortunate and unexpected side-effect of victory)
If only we could open our minds and listen to our bodies more instead of constantly over-riding its messages. At the moment mine is telling me to go to bed. I’d better obey, for once.
Enjoy your Monday

Hey Craig,
I get out on my mountain bike and ride for 10-20 miles off road in the beautiful hills of Somerset UK with a friend of mine, I was until recently just drinking water, my friend suggested I try an engery drink, I now drink Lucozade sport whilst riding. I’m flying now! I don’t truly believe its a magic drink, but I think my mind does. I really think I know what you are saying.
Follow the white rabbit.
Regards,
Matt.
Hello Craig,
Great post….It’s so true what you say…
Lets just say my last 12mths have not been great, I have never experienced these stresses like this before…
This in turn has had a huge change in my health, I get sick alot, my immune system is down, no energy & have lost weight.
I know the things in my life that need to change to make my health & well being better.
I have already started to achieve these changes however, still need find a way to deal with certian stresses in a positive way.
Thanks for this post Craig!!

As always, a wonderful post, Craig. As a student of literature, I have come across this so many times – that our beliefs and thoughts, be they of success, health or fear, get manifested as our reality. David Malouf explores this thought in his lovely novel An Imaginary Life; that often people may catch a disease because they fear it too much.
I wonder if at times our ‘rational’ self – dependent on current information or facts – can come in the way of our more intuitive and affirmative thoughts.
Best,
Pooja
Hi Craig,
I knew all about the placebo effect from doing science at school but never really clicked how powerful it was until I read your story. You see, just 2 days ago I healed my lower back with some dedicated exercise but more than anything else mind power. I really believed what I was doing would work. To put it in perspective I have had excruciating lower back pain for the last 18 years (got worse and worse too – the last 2 or 3 years it has been very difficult to even sleep although you tend to get used to the pain, sadly). I had been to many hundreds of professionals to have it fixed. I’ll admit I did have a 5 min chat with an osteo 3 weeks ago who gave me some invaluable advice but still, it is absolutely amazing that in only 2 or 3 weeks I have fixed it on my own with good exercise but mainly a strong self belief to get it right so I can do all the active and day top day things I used to enjoy so much. It works, but if you’re a skeptic I understadn. Just try not to be! Ciao
Very therapeutic! So true but yet I forget!
I hear/experience and see this all the time but yet I fail in the Trust issue as I still doubt…Althought I absolutely agree with your post.
Thanks for sharing your structure and insight, truly amazing!
Cheers
Kate
Thanks Chelle – enjoy your Monday
We’re on the same page Mon
Good questions Christina x
And long as it works Matt (IT being either the Lucozade or your brain). Keep up the riding..

Hi Pooja
Thanks for David Malouf tip – I’ll check out his book
Hey Steven – I believe you. Enjoy your new-found back health
You’re welcome Kate
Hi Craig,
This is just what I needed to hear today…Thanks!

Hi Craig!!
This is brilliant! I love this stuff.
You have such a gift for conveying these ideas! Well done you!
Intellectually and in a “collective-mindset” way it doesn’t make any sense – it’s just dodgy new age crap – (you know what I mean – I have no words today!!), but it’s very much a “spiritual” thing for me. I believe all this stuff.
I agree with ex-nurse Mon, TCM is hitting closer to the target and looks at the connection between emotions and physical health. For anyone who hasn’t tried it – acupuncture is the bomb!
Fortunately, I am getting closer to being able to heal myself. Still work-in-progress, but I’m getting there!
If only I could convince my significant other!
Have a fabulous day – I know I will!

Glad it resonated for you Em… x
Hi Craig
Another great post! I think we must address the school system now so that the future generation are not bogged down with the ‘sausage factory’ mindset that school promotes. The often competitive atmosphere and constant comparing of one another. It has been proven time and time again that a childs creativity drastcally declines in grades 2 and 3 when the childs becomes more ‘aware’ of their ‘social’ surroundings. And in this competative and narrow environment we forced our children into, for up to 13 years of our young lives, is tragic. Our school system must change to prevent many of the social hang ups that many of us are now spending years and years trying to reverse, from happening in the future. Just think back to your own years at Primary School and High School. I shudder at the thought.
I think your friend from the tropical Island (can’t remember the details of where) was a perfect example of a soul that was allowed to develop in a much more natural state. What a beautiful person he seemed. No hangups. No insecurities.
Most of us are growing and conciously changing now, and it’s friggin hard work! Unless the school system gets on board I can only see our concious awakening taking a whole lot longer than it should.
Have a gud n!
Oh, and I totally agree with everything you said in your post!!
It frustrates me that we all have to work so hard to live ‘normal’ happy lives when if we could just get the first 12 years right it would make the rest of the journey easier.
Happy Happy Joy Joy…mmmm
Hi Craig
While I believe this to be true it is easier said than done … like so many things in my life.
My own experience is that despite the specialists telling me I have all these ‘diseases/conditions’ I choose not to let them rule who I am or how I live my life.
Thus far it is working out ok, (my neurologist is surprised every year that I have not had another MS event, even though I told him 4 years ago one was enough and i was not going to allow anymore,) but maybe I do need to open my mind that extra step and truly believe I can heal them not just limit their impact on me.
Hmm next i will believe I really can be thin and fit and successful and and …..
OMG your going to make my brain explode!
Thanks for that , now I need to heal my headache

” Thing’s only have the meaning we give them” This will be my thought for the day. Thankyou, Jules.
You are the exception to the rule that
“you only get what you pay for”
Your posts on this site are the the best FREE advice I have ever come across.
Keep up the good work
Healing yourself from the inside out, now there’s an idea. i see people immerse themselves in the warm water pools as part of the healing process. Very therapeutic and effective! Have a splashing day.
Hi Craig
I’ve enjoyed reading some of your ‘stuff’ over the last few days-interesting stuff. I have long believed that positive attracts positive & that we know so little about what our minds can actually do. I often tell my kids when they are ill to tell their bodies to make them better. You story about the ‘wart’ man was interesting, one of my young daughters had some nasty looking warts on a few toes, on one of her feet & after trying a well known brand of wart remover a few times I decided to leave them alone but kept telling my daughter to ‘tell those warts to go away!’ – a few weeks ago she was getting out of the bath & excitedly calling me – ‘the warts have gone away Mum!’ – maybe the power of positive thinking & healing at work!
Also thought I’d put my twenty cents worth in regarding blaming the school system for so many problems people have. I think more than ever schools/teachers understand that all children do develop & progress at different rates & where possible they try to cater for this. I also truly belive that it is my job as the parent to build & build & build my childs self esteem, sense of self & sense of belief in their own abilities. These are the building blocks that enable them to be creative, to understand that all of us have different talents, to appreciate competition & to not be afraid to do well but also not be afraid to fail. I think that this is what my parents did for me & I am trying to do this for my kids – I was always told to be the best that I could be, I think this is a great piece of advice.
Thanks for dropping by and sharing Jaine
That could get messy Ruth (the brain explosion)
And what a good thought it is Jules
Thankyou Murdoch
You can weave water into any conversation can’t you JSP?
x
Thanks for dropping by and sharing Anon
What a great post, this is something I have been thinking about and researching and truely believe in, after having made myself sick with stress for 10 years. Sometimes by being sick we can avoid situations we should deal with. No more.
Ginny
Good for you Ginny
This is a topic that definitely needs more attention. So many people walk around with a ‘woe is me’ attitude and have no idea that they’re literally creating the vicious circle in which they believe they’re trapped.
Activities such as regular exercise, funny movies or nights out with good friends are a great way of distracting the mind from its woes, but it takes a lot more than that to truly turn things around. Unfortunately it seems that those most trapped by this sort of thinking are the ones least likely to buy into the idea that they’re bringing it on themselves, and the first ones to claim tiredness, busyness, stress etc as an excuse!
I think to really break this message to someone we need to get inside their heads and find out what’s really important to them and then use it as an initial motivation to turn over a new pattern of thought. I know this worked for me when I realised how far I’d drifted from my goal of financial freedom and simple everyday ‘joie de vivre’
Long time lurker.
Awesome post Craig!
Sometimes I forward on your emails to friends that I feel my benifit, sometimes I’ll print them out and highlight sections and tuck them in the work folder and read them on the road and sometimes they get printed and stuck on the fridge.
This got all 3!
Thanks greatly for the insightful and thought provoking post, have a ripper week.
Scott.
Only just found this site today and OMG (but not really surprising given the way the universe works….) it is exactly what I need at this moment in time. So I have signed up to the emails and look forward to getting them. But I so totally believe in everything you say in this post! Your other articles are fascinating and are giving me the kick I need to snap out of my “I’m not coping” day and get on with things. Thank you Craig! (P.S. When is the next Renovate Your Life workshops???)
