H2O is The Go
Without doubt, water is our most important nutrient. In fact, seventy-five percent of you, is it. Water, that is. Your body can do without a lot of things for a long time but it can’t survive without H2O for long. More often than not, hydration is the most misunderstood and mis-managed component of our overall health-management plan. Despite the fact that keeping our body well-hydrated is a relatively easy process, many people fail to do so, thereby putting their health at significant risk.
So, if you need some convincing, here are a few reasons to give your thirsty cells a drink:
1. Dehydrated people often have stinky breath.
2. Therefore, nobody wants to kiss them!
3. Drinking cold water increases our metabolic rate.
4. Which helps with fat-loss.
5. Being well-hydrated helps curb our appetite and cravings.
6. Which helps us avoid over-eating.
7. Because our blood is mostly water, being dehydrated increases the viscosity (thickness) of our blood.
8. Which means our cardiovascular system has to work much harder.
9. Which means we’re more likely to have a stroke or heart attack.
10. Because we have less blood volume (when we’re dehydrated), our heart needs to beat faster in order to deliver adequate oxygen around the body.
11. And our blood pressure will be elevated.
12. From a sporting point of view, our dehydrated body will fatigue quicker.
13. Our muscles will be weaker (they’re 75% water too).
14. We will also be less coordinated.
15. Which means decreased sporting performance.
16. Dehydration also leads to constipation.
17. Which, ironically, makes us feel like shit (because our body is storing, not eliminating, all those toxins).
18. It also causes headaches.
19. And lethargy.
20. And muscle cramps. Those middle-of-the-night calf cramps suck.
21. And vagueness and an inability to concentrate (because our brain is 90% water).
22. This mental vagueness can affect a myriad of things: communication, driving skills, work productivity, judgment and mood.
23. Dehydration also leads to dry skin and potentially, a range of skin conditions (our skin is our largest organ and requires plenty of H2O).
24. Dehydrated skin looks old before its time. OMG!
25. Because we’re mostly water, a chronically dehydrated body will be more susceptible to serious disease. Dehydrated organs are unhealthy organs.
Drink anyone?

And I’m finally realising that the more you drink, the easier it is TO drink. Getting so much better at carting a water bottle with me everywhere these days, particularly in winter where it’s easier if you just sip throughout the day instead of attempting to guzzle half a litre at once in catch-up.
Now to get my daughter in the same habit. She is terrible at drinking and I’m sure her dry skin is testament to that!
ewe I know I am often dehydrated – and just love the kissing bits…..I hope that is not me.
Good reminder now that it’s getting hot and sweaty here… ^^;
Hi Craig,
Water is good. 1.5 Ltr per day is my minimum intake.
Thanks & be good to yourself
David
Love my water ………
Bravo! But remember that “water ain’t water!” Todays tap water is loaded with toxic chemicals. No I’m not selling anything…but I used to work for AlkaWay before coming back to Melbourne, a company with cheap and easy solutions to both purified water and alkaline water (the best water that olympians use). Google them if you’re really interested in health!
I agree. My partner just ordered a water purifier/ alkalinizer after a health practitioner told him his body was acidic. Boy was he mad. He had been spending thousands on buying “pure” water free of all the nasties, but with a ph of 4! Apparently you can buy drops to add to your water to alkalinize it (a cheaper solution) I have only now discovered how unhealthy an acidic body is.
I am from Norway – up here we still have great tap water, luckily
BTW: Love your posts Craig – great blog!
I started drinking more water when I was trying to stop drinking Coke, and now have 2 x 1.5 litre bottles a day, usually while sitting at my desk. I have found that my skins is looking better, I am thinking clearer and if I dont get it I really start to miss it. Must start taking the bottle with me when I go out of the office. Even now that it is colder, I make sure I keep up the fluids. Incedientally, I am also trying to detox from suger, and have found that the taste of the water seems to be changing, it seems to be tasting better just by itself, with out having to add anything to it. weird…
Erin, I too am trying to give up my addiction to sugar. Have no problem with drinking water. I am reading ‘The Sweet Poison Quit Plan’ David Gillespie and it is quite scary how much sugar is in so many foods. I am finding it all abit overwhelming and wonder if any of us can truly stop eating sugar. Also, I LOVE sweet food, am a huge cook and feel I am giving up my dearest (but deadly) friend.
What is your take on sugar Craig? (PS. still waiting to hear when you are coming to Wagga)
The importance of drinking water in good amount is explained on a succint way.
Everyone knows the importance of drinking but none implements it.
We should realise that drinking water is not limited to the time of thirst but is an all day phenomena , which may appear tough in the beginning but
becomes a habit eventually …
nice ..
Hi Craig,
Drinking water is easy for me and I understand the need for it,
How ever there is (in my opinion) confusing information about how much to drink, as we are all different sizes and shapes what is applicable for one might not fit the other, one piece of information that I use as a guide is
30 ml of water per kilo of body weight
This is the base minimum of pure water that needs to drunk during the day. Drinks such as tea or coffee etc. are not included.
when you Pee if it aint the same colour coming out as it went in then you need to drink more!
and obviously when you exercise then you need to drink more as well.
The thing that currently freaks me out, is the CRAP that is sold as energy drinks, fair dinkum the stuff should be banned,
dont get me going on these as I reckon I could write an article about them for you Craig, sorry to offend anyone but they are just pure shit!
I’m feeling flustered, I go and have a glass of pure water.
Hmmm, very interesting facts. But I have to admit to being a terrible drinker! I have been all my life and find it difficult to get into the habit of drinking enough because I’m always busy. No excuse, but then I have to go to the toilet more which means more down time. Isn’t that terrible. Okay, you’ve convinced me to try harder!
)
… Yikes! Already on to my second bottle of water!
